A Unique Cham Heritage in Quy Nhon
Located in Tay Son district, Binh Dinh province, Duong Long Tower is one of the most unique and ancient Cham architectural complexes in Vietnam. Built in the late 12th century, the complex consists of three towers: the central tower (42m high) dedicated to Shiva, the southern tower (36m high) to Vishnu, and the northern tower (34m high) to Brahma. This is the tallest brick tower complex in Southeast Asia, featuring unique architecture and exquisite sculpture.
Unique Architecture – A Blend of Cham and Khmer Styles
Duong Long Tower harmoniously combines Cham and Khmer architectural arts. The decorative motifs are directly carved on massive stones placed atop the towers, showcasing traditional Cham stone carving techniques blended with Khmer-Angkor carving methods. This results in an architectural style that is both simple and intricate.
Cultural and Spiritual Values
Duong Long Tower is not merely an architectural work but also a repository of profound cultural and spiritual values of the Cham people. The towers are dedicated to the three supreme Hindu deities: Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma, reflecting the rich spiritual life of the Cham. Artifacts excavated at the site, such as reliefs of Naga serpents, lions, Makara, elephants, and praying figures, convey the Hindu essence of the Duong Long tower complex.
