Ha Long Bay – World natural heritage recognized by UNESCO on December 17, 1994 with exceptional aesthetic value.
On December 2, 2020, UNESCO recognized Ha Long Bay as a world heritage site for the second time according to the standards of cadastral and geomorphological value.
Ha Long Bay is located in the northeastern region of Vietnam, including the waters of Ha Long city, Cam Pha city and part of Van Don island district.
The bay has an area of 1,553 km2, including 1,969 large and small islands. The recognized heritage area has an area of 434 km2 including 775 islands, limited to Dau Go island (west), Ba Ham lake (south), and Cong Tay island (east).
Ha Long Bay contains important traces in the process of formation and development of earth’s history, is the cradle of ancient Vietnamese residence, and is at the same time a great shaping work of nature with the presence of ancient Vietnamese people. Thousands of rocky islands of all shapes and sizes, with many interesting caves, gather into a world that is both lively and mysterious. Besides, Ha Long Bay is also a place with high biodiversity with typical ecosystems and thousands of extremely rich and diverse types of flora and fauna. This place is also associated with the cultural values and heroic history of the Vietnamese people.
Ha Long Bay stands out with its system of rocky islands and caves. The islands in Ha Long have two types: limestone islands and schist islands, with a geological tectonic age of 250 – 280 million years.
